Notes
A rare and old bottling of Dalwhinnie 8 Year Old from the 1980s. In the old 75cl format, we only have one and we won’t be opening it to provide a tasting note, sorry! In its stead, please enjoy this description from the back of the bottle…
“This whisky has been distilled in one of the highest distilleries in Scotland. Set in bleak wild country surrounded by mountains of the Grampian range by the end of Loch Ericht and near to the source of the Spey. Cluny’s Cave on the Loch Ericht West Shore was where Bonnie Prince Charlie hid after Culloden. An area full of Scottish history.
This Pure Malt with its unique flavour has the famous signature of renown on its label.”
(the signature is that of James Buchanan)

The nose kicks off like a walk through a summer garden, finished off with round of buttered granary toast with honey. The palate is big, the floral notes giving way to pears in syrup, some lightly charred oak and a touch of salt.

Lemon and orange barley sweets on the nose, which opens up to give cereal notes with the addition of water. Lemon barley again, on the palate, with pleasant honeysuckle and sweetness in the finish.

Salted milk chocolate, pecans drizzled in honey, baked apples with a dusting of icing sugar. A very engaging palate, it asks to be sipped again; light and sweet at first, with malty characters of butter pastry and enduring mouthfeel.
