Lowland Malt Whisky

Those very few distilleries left lying below the Highland/Lowland divide with a far lighter, floral style.
The region, once having a number of whisky producers, now only has three operating distilleries; Glenkinchie (near Edinburgh), Auchentoshan (near Clydebank), and Bladnoch (in Galloway). At least six other lowland single malts are still available, but are no longer distilled, Rosebank, Kinclaith, St. Magdalene, Ladyburn, Inverleven and Littlemill.
Traditionally Lowland Single Malts are triple distilled (though this has not been true of all of them), often giving them a lighter taste.
One of my treasures is a 1960 single cask Rosebank. About 15 years ago I bought all the bottles from this cask, about 160 only! A glorious Whisky, a glorious colour, a piece of history! The Rosebank distillery has been closed and “decommissioned” since 1993. I was, like many others were, a little sad that Rosebank wasn’t kept open and made one of the Classic Malts (although for a very short period, I think it was considered and included) by United Distillers.
The few Lowlands left are indeed lighter in style than all the others, lighter and generally fruitier, but as mentioned elsewhere the lightness can disappear depending on age and cask. But of them all, extant and extinct, Rosebank is still my favourite.
