I was up in the Heart of Speyside recently (which is the Heart of Whisky), joining minds with another Family Concern. Just like us at LUVIANS their emphasis is on quality above all! This is not simply quality of product – that goes without saying – but also quality in relationship with people; customers and staff! Some of their staff are fourth generation.
Seven of my customers made the journey with me, a journey into History and into the Highlands to the Vale of the Green Grass, home to the GLENFARCLAS distillery. This has been owned continuously by the same family – the Grants – since 1865, and like their distant cousins of the same name, from a few hills and glens away, the Grants of Glenfiddich, they have resisted the approaches of the big, big operators in the industry. The Grants of Glenfarclas have also resisted another feature of the modern Whisky industry – ENDLESS WOOD FINISHES! They have wood finishes of course – good sherry casks!
I mentioned quality earlier. This stands out in the Whiskies they so generously let us taste. (Who said Scots are mean? Young George Grant was anything but mean! Generous with his time, his knowledge, his enthusiasm and his warm hospitality.) The consensus amongst the group was that the 15 yo, the 21yo and the magnificent 105 were just brilliant. We of course tasted more than just these: some family casks, and also the exquisite 40yo; but I’ll tell you about these another time. They certainly weren’t shabby!
Some of you might be forgiven, given my family and career background and given that I use the word so often, for thinking that I am talking about a different “family”. Well, I don’t mean that “family”, but I will tell you about it in a future issue of comment on the LUVIANS site.
