Fortified Wine

Fortified wine is wine to which a distilled beverage (usually brandy) has been added. When added to wine before the fermentation process is complete, the alcohol in the distilled beverage kills the yeast and leaves residual sugar behind. The end result is a wine that is both sweeter and stronger.
Fortified wine is distinguished from spirits made from wine in that spirits are produced by means of distillation, while fortified wine is simply wine that has had a spirit added to it. Many different styles of fortified wine have been developed, including port, sherry, madeira, marsala, and vermouth.
We are very proud of the fact that we carry a range of Fortifieds that is second to none. We are also very proud that Peter Wood who manages the St Andrews’ Luvians, is not only and expert on, but a great enthusiast of Port in particular and Madeira more generally.
Then we have Richard Bray, also in St Andrews, who has a wealth of knowledge of the vintages and a great love of that other rich category, Dessert Wines. Our Sherry range is not too shabby either, having most of the Lustau offerings crowding our shelves.
There are truly wonderful Sherries which have such a fantastic spectrum of flavours and styles. An apocryphal story has it that the Gonzalez Byass Family are blessed with amazing longevity. The reason for this is that the family members drink a bottle of Tio Pepe, that peerless Fino, every day – starting at lunchtime, continuing into the afternoon with snacks and finishing pre-dinner as an aperitif and post-dinner as a digestif. I repeat this is an apocryphal story. But it is true the members of this family are very long-lived!
